The supreme Samurai is the Shogun, the absolute ruler of the land - shown here as chess king. To the Japanese princess, depicted here as the queen, loyalty to her husband was paramount. The Samurai soldiers themselves, the bishops, used swords, spears, muskets and bows - all with deadly skill - to attack their enemies. The knights are the Samurai cavalry, archers who would traditionally shoot their foe only from the left. The rook is the Samurai holy temple, where the warrior would go to meditate and grow. The pawns are the foot soldiers, not yet true Samurai warriors, who were assembled in groups by their clans.
