Product Info
A variation of the Smiley Lock, also by Jean-Claude Constantin. The knobs on the front can rotate, but nothing else initially happens. The objective is to open the happy lock. Can you uncover the secret combination to open this clever lock puzzle? Made of laser cut wood, anodized metal and acrylic, the solution is obtained by spinning the five knobs to the correct position. A novel design by Jean Claude Constantin.

I have other puzzles by this inventor, but the Smilock does not live up to expectation. The design allows the solver to take the puzzle apart and examine how it works. And that's exactly what I did after getting nowhere. Seeing the inside of the puzzle confirmed what I suspected: The dials have to be aligned *precisely* in the correct orientation with very unforgiving tolerances. I haven't bothered to work out what the odds are of getting the five dials in correct positions by chance. But even if you could pass that stage, the lock itself rotates open and rubs against the dials, pushing them out of position. The materials used for the lock and dials (both are wood) bind when moved. If the dial was plastic, perhaps this puzzle would work as intended. Save your money, don't get this puzzle.
